Aquarium Essentials
Are you trying to decide whether or not you want to set up an aquarium in your home or office? Do you know where to start? To set up an aquarium, you need to know what pieces are necessary in order to create a beautiful experience and a health environment in your aquarium. Let’s talk about the equipment necessary to set up an extraordinary aquarium.
Filter
The filter is what helps to remove any impurities that make it into the water, along with the excrement of the aquatic life which you keep in the aquarium. If you do not use a filter or something happens to your filter, the balance of the environment will become unstable and unhealthy for life sustenance. For your aquarium you will need to choose between biological, mechanical or chemical filtration systems. You will determine the size of the filter, based on the size of your aquarium. You need to know how many gallons of water your aquarium holds at full capacity. Based on the size of your aquarium, your filter should be able to circulate through all of the water in your tank every 3 to 4 hours.
Temperature
Water temperature is excessively important to the health of your aquarium. There are two pieces of equipment connected to temperature, a thermometer and a heater. Just like with the filter, the water heater will be purchased based on the amount of water held in the aquarium when it is filled to capacity.
Lighting
Lighting is important to the aquarium. It provides two purposes including allowing for photosynthesis to take place, which helps to oxygenate the aquarium and it provides the necessary lighting for you to enjoy the beauty of your aquarium. You will choose your lighting based on the size of your aquarium. Too much light will overheat the water and two little will not produce enough light for proper photosynthesis.
Chemicals
It is important to treat the water in the aquarium for various things. Most important, when you are using water directly from the tap, you must dechlorinate the water prior to putting any life into your aquarium. Choose a good water conditioner which will dechlorinate the water and add the necessary conditioners to make the most optimal environment for your aquatic life. Additionally, purchase test kits to help you to assess the levels of ammonia and other unwanted chemicals in your aquarium.
Substrate
Substrates are necessary to keep a health aquatic environment in your aquarium. One substrate is colored gravel, which should be placed in the bottom of the aquarium at approximately 2 inches in thickness. Add a variety of decorations to make the environment fun for your to look at and healthy for your fish. Many decorations are sold which help to balance the pH in your aquarium, so their benefits are twofold.
You now have all of the information you need to make the decision to add a fabulous aquarium to your home or office environment. Have fun designing and putting together your aquarium and enjoy watching those fish swim.
