What fresh water fish go together nicely?
I got a 20 gallon tank and we would like some colorful fresh water fish that won’t fight with other fish, low maintenance fish, and fish that we can find at petco or some store like that. We are beginners at this. Any help would be great!
There is no such thing as a low maintenance fish.
If you want the tank to be easy to keep, it means keeping up with it – doing proper routine on the tank with partial water changes and vacuuming every week.
It also helps to stock the tank more lightly.
If you are new, start off simply. If you just cram a bunch of fish in there and see what happens, will more likely lead to problems.
So start off with just one type of fish. Go with something like harlequin rasboras or a small type of tetra and get about 6 of them. This will be a good start, and before adding more fish, see if you can keep these guys alive for a couple of months first.
Then you can make a little list of compatible species. Check out what you like, see their needs, and try to balance the tank. You might consider some bottom dwellers, like a group of corydora catfish or small type loaches. Once you have a group of bottom dweller and your group of open water schoolers, you can add a centrepiece fish to bring it together – something like a male betta, or perhaps a couple of honey gouramis.
Now, before getting any fish you should understand:
-what the “cycle” is and how to do it
-what kind of weekly care the tank should get
-how to feed, and more importantly how not to overfeed, the fish
-how to properly give your tank water changes and vacuuming
-what the fish you have chosen need to be happy (some need more plants, some less, some need caves, some are best in groups, others in pairs or solo)
